If you walk for 14 minutes from the Mitsuki Ryokan, you can reach Nijo Castle a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Yes… Another treasure to discover, just around the corner). The castle might be one of the best representation of the power over the Edo period that start around 1600. Nijo Castle was the residence of a warlord for more than 200 years.
When you enter, look up, otherwise you might miss the main gate called the “Karamon” on which you can see birds, butterflies and flowers made of wood. If you look well, you might also see dragons and tigers that represent power !
Take off your shoes and deep dive into the Japanese history walking inside the corridors of the castle. You will see all the tatami rooms and the beautiful painting of wild animals on the sliding doors. What did I liked the most ? The painting of the wild cranes and the fact that you have signed with explanations in English in front of every room. Once you’re out, have a walk into the garden, where you can admire pines, a rock garden and peaceful ponds… A great spot to take pictures !

Nijo Castle : open everyday from 8:45 AM to 5:00 PM.
After the visit of the Nijo Castle (1 hour, maybe more if you take a lot of pictures like me), I can only recommend you to visit Shinsen-en Temple, a buddhist temple just 6 minutes walk from the Castle. The temple is not full of tourists so can enjoy the calm and admire the pond with koi and take pictures on the traditional Japanese bridge.

Shinsen-en Temple : open everyday from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM.
It’s time for a break !
If you walk less than 5 minutes from Shinsen-en Temple, you will arrive in Kyoto Sanjo Shopping Street, where you can eat some snacks or get a coffee. There you’ll find some onigiri shops or traditional restaurants and charming coffee places. The best spot to have a break after a day walking around Kyoto !
There is so much to see, while you are staying with us at the Mitsuki Kyoto :
